News - Membership - 9 Mar 2017

EDITORIAL - Membership Matters!

Comrades, I don't often editorialise on the Branch website, but every once in a while it is necessary.

I was speaking to our 2nd VP and Membership Chair, Comrade Rae Ashton today, and she informed me that she has 95 2017 Membership cards behind the bar, that still have yet to be picked up.

Ok, some of you may have simply forgotten. I was an "end-of December" renewer myself this year. Consider yourselves politely reminded.

The disappointment comes from those of you who chose not to renew.

I've heard people say "Why renew when I can still go in for a beer?" Yes. Branch 530, along with many other Branches nowadays, welcomes signed-in guests to our Clubroom. Frankly, the added bar/kitchen revenue goes a long way in keeping the wolf from the door.

But if you are not a Member in good standing, you can't attend the General Meetings to voice your opinion on Branch operations.. You can't be elected to the Executive to help with operation of the Branch. You can't vote in the elections. You can't take part in the great Legion Sports programme. You can't take advantage of the numerous businesses offering "Legion Discounts" under the Legion Benefits package.

There are a number of Veterans Organisations out there today, but the Royal Canadian Legion remains the strongest voice Veterans have in society, to remind our politicians of all stripes that Veterans matter. This strength can only be maintained with high Membership numbers. That's why Membership Matters!

By the way, the Branch gets to keep a portion of your dues towards day-to-day operations. Currently, there is well over $1000 that would be in the Branch bank account if the 95 "non-renewals" would simply reconsider.

In the grand scheme of things, surely your  buck-a-week isn't too high a price to pay to remain a "card-carrying Member" of the greatest Veterans Service Organisation in Canada. Remember, some paid a lot more, with their blank cheque issued to the Citizens of Canada.

I think we owe it to them.

Thank You for reading.
