On Friday November 17th, Comrade Bob Westphal Sr. was surprised with a Life Member Award by District C Commander Comrade Lynn McLellan.

Here is the text of the citation:

Recommendation of Life Membership for Comrade Robert (Bob) Westphal Sr.

We recommend that Robert (Bob) Westphal Sr. be awarded Life Membership for his many years of dedicated service to The Royal Canadian Legion, Waterloo Branch No. 530 and to the Community.

Since 1996, Comrade Bob has been an active Ordinary Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Waterloo Branch No. 530.  As an Officer and Executive of Branch No. 530 from 1997 to 2001, Comrade Bob has held several committees.  He has served as Poppy Chairman, Canteen Chairman, Sick and Visiting, and Second Vice President.  He has also been involved in many Remembrance Dinners.  He has received numerous Certificates of Appreciation and a Certificate of Merit in 1997.  He is the proud recipient of both the Golden Jubilee Medal and the Diamond Jubilee Medal.  While maintaining his own duties, he was always willing to help with any other committee, often demonstrating his loyalty and devotion to his oath as a member of The Royal Canadian Legion.  Comrade Bob has been responsible for promoting Remembrance and serving his Community.  He has been and continues to be a Fantastic Ambassador of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Comrade Bob continues to participate in our Legion Remembrance Day Program, ‘Why Do We Remember’ week for School Children as he believes in our mandate of making sure that none of us forget the Sacrifices of our Veterans. Bob gives support and assistance to the Annual Poppy Campaign.  He had attended all the K-W Poppy Fund and Veteran’s Council Meetings, along with the Branch Executive and General Meetings. He is usually present for parades and for Legion Funerals.   Comrade Bob was elected Chairman of the KW Poppy Fund in 2001.  He held this position until May 2007.

Apart from his elected duties these titles demand, Comrade Bob had demonstrated considerable devotion and loyalty to his fellow comrades.  During times of difficulty he has taken care of comrades, driven them to and from doctor appointments, grocery shopped, and contacted families when needed.  He has gone out of his way to make sure comrades can get to the Legion for socializing and taken them home after.

Comrade Bob was also active with other Community Organizations.  For many years, he droveCancer patients to and from appointments both locally and out of town.  Comrade Bob was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels delivering meals to Seniors and shut ins for over 10 years..

We trust that on the basis of the dedicated services and leadership outlined above, that this would qualify Comrade Robert (Bob) Westphal Sr. for Life Membership in Waterloo Branch No. 530 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
