Afghanistan: 21 Jan 2014
79 Troops return home

CFB TRENTON – Catching up on family time is Cpl. Cameron Lane's next mission.

The 33-year-old traffic technician with 2 Air Movements Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton and 78 other members of the Canadian Forces (CF) posted in Afghanistan for the last six months, part of Operation ATTENTION, returned home Monday morning.

Formally activated in November 2009, the operation is Canada's contribution to NATO's training mission in Afghanistan, which delivers training and professional development support to the Afghan national army, air force and national police.

The mission has a legislated personnel cap of 950 members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

“I am just happy to be home,” said Lane after hugging his wife Leonora, seven-month-old daughter Isla and three-year-old son Aidan.

The Lanes hadn't seen “daddy” since last August.

As his father entered the air base passenger terminal after checking in with customs, Aidan walked to him with a sign that read “We love you daddy, welcome home!”, while his mother held one that read “I've waited 168 days for this moment Cpl. Lane!”.

Canada' final commitment to Op ATTENTION was Lane's first overseas deployment since he joined the CF about 12 years ago. He and his wife are originally from Windsor. The couple settled in Trenton for Lane's current posting about three years ago.

“The mission was very good. It was a closure for myself. We did very well, we were ahead of schedule and we completed the mission on time, which is key,” he said.

Lane was “pretty anxious” to get home to spend family time with wife and kids. Isla was six weeks old when her father left Trenton bound for Afghanistan. He missed playing with planes with his son.

“Especially last month, I was really anxious to get home and be with the kids,” he said.

“It was my first tour away and it was during the (Christmas) holidays. We managed to Skype with the kids on Christmas morning, so I got to see them open up their gifts. Now I get to know this little one (Isla).”

Leonora said she was not one to sit and rock back and forth in her chair, waiting for her husband to come home.

“It can be a little tricky, but you've got to look past that. I am not one to just sit and wait. You do what you've got to do,” she said.

Lane left for training one month prior to deploy just two days after his daughter Isla was born and was home for a week before he left for the middle-east country.

“Then they told him 'get ready, you're going',” she added.

Leonora was happy to see him come home Monday, but nervous.

“I haven't been this nervous since I got married,” she said, laughing. “A lot has changed in the last six months. I am excited, but I'm nervous to see how it's all going to play out.”

Toronto resident and member of the Canadian Forces (army) Rick Goodyear knows first hand what his wife Maj. Tina Lam, also with the army, went through while in Afghanistan since last June. She was welcomed home by her husband and two sons.

“We both were in Shilo, Manitoba, she left to go to Afghanistan and I got posted with the kids to Toronto,” said Goodyear, who served two tours in Afghanistan himself.

“It was her first tour,” he added. “It was my first time alone with the kids, but it was probably harder for her to be away from the kids.”
