New District Commander elected Apr 9th

Branch 469 Elmira hosted the District "C" Convention on April 8th and 9th, at the Lions Hall.

The weather certainly coöperated at Parade time Saturday morning, and throughout the weekend.

Delegates took part in a special Vimy Ridge seminar in the afternoon, and a great banquet by the 469 Ladies Auxiliary in the evening. We were honoured to have the President of Ontario Command, Comrade Brian Weaver, as our featured speaker for the evening.

Sunday was all business.

We heard from Cory Woodford of VAC, who presented a lengthy account of benefits for Veterans in the new budget.

We elected a new District "C" Commander, Comrade Lynn McLellan. Lynn was acclaimed, as Comrade Patti Sargent-Gibson declined her nomination. I know Lynn will do a great job running the District.

The election of the Deputy Commander was a little less straight forward. It took a second ballot to determine a majority, with Comrade Eric Ross coming out the victor of the four very capable candidates.

We heard reports from all the committee chairman, and there was a lot of good information presented.

Long-time zone PRO, Comrade Brenda Funston, announced her "retirement", and introduced her replacement, Comrade Rae Bauman. We wish Rae all the best in this challenging position.

It was announced that Branch 530's own Kim Peters was selected as this year's candidate for the Nijimegen March. We're all proud of you Kim!

The Branches were very generous with their donations to various Legion programmes, as follows:

  • Track and Field   $2,750.00
  • Starting blocks      $550.00
  • Homeless Veterans' Fund   $31,500.00
  • District Hospital Fund   $17,950.00
  • Charitable Foundation   $31,700.00
  • Bursary Programme   $22,950.00
  • Youth Ed   $1,300.00

Remember, these conventions are not just for the Executive. Any Member can be registered as an observer (non-voting) delegate. There  is always something to be learned. The Fall District Convention will be in Durham October 8th, so keep it in mind.
