 A ROUX

ALL OF YOU GREAT COOKS KNOW WHAT A ROUX IS.
A ROUX IS EQUAL PARTS FAT (BUTTER) AND FLOUR.THE FAT IS HEATED TO A LIQUID STATE IN A PAN. THEN FLOUR IS WHISKED IN AND COOKED UNTIL IT’S NO LONGER RAW.
A BLONDE ROUX TAKES ONLY A FEW MINUTES. A DARKER ROUX TAKES A BIT LONGER TO COOK AND IS USED MAINLY IN CAJUN COOKING. A ROUX IS THEN USED TO THICKEN OTHER SAUCES.

A KREWE (CREW)

A KREWE IS A SOCIAL ORGANISATION USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH CARNIVAL OR MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS.

A ROUX AND A KREWE ARE BOTH BEING FEATURED AT OUR JAZZ CLUB THIS SATURDAY. FIRST WE USE A LITTLE ROBERTA AND GLENN, BUTTER FOR THE BASE.

THEN WE WHISK IN SOME PETER AND GRAM  AND LET THEM HEAT UP FOR A BLONDE BASE.

THEN WE ADD SOME ANDREIJ AND TOBY AND HEAT SOME MORE FOR A CAJuN BASE. NOW IT’S REALLY HOT.

THEN WE NEED AN ORGANISATION TO HANDLE IT AND WE GET

KREWE DE ROUX

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 9TH

 ROBERTA HUNT – PIANO
GLENN ANDERSON – DRUMS
PETER TURNER – TROMBONE
GRAM WHITTY – BASS
ANDREIJ  SARANDON – CORNET
TOBY HUGHES – SAXOPHONES

THE FOLLOWING IS A LETTER FROM

THE QUEEN CITY JAZZ SOCIETY, BUFFALO, NY,

WRITTEN IN THEIR “4-BAR TAG” NEWSLETTER

IN MY PAST 10 YEARS AS PRESIDENT OF OUR SOCIETY, I HAVE BECOME AWARE OF A RECURRING SITUATION FOR ANY OF THE CANADIAN JAZZ BANDS TO PERFORM FOR QCJS IN OUR SUNDAY SHOWS. MANY ISSUES HAVE TO BE OVERCOME. “TOO MUCH TRAFFIC, A HASSLE ABOUT INSTRUMENTS COMING ACROSS THE BORDER, SPACE IN THE CAR FOR PEOPLE AND THE LARGE INSTRUMENTS, LATE ARRIVALS BACK IN TORONTO”, AND MANY OTHER SUCH THINGS.

IT IS MY OPINION THAT THE CURRENT BOARD HAS BROKEN THROUGH THE BARRIER. ON A RECENT SUNDAY, WE HAD A CANADIAN BAND KNOWN AS “THE JAZZ GANGSTAS” WITH LEADER JAMIE AUG. HE IS A FANTASTIC DRUMMER WITH MORE THAN 20 YEARS WITH ‘THE CLIMAX JAZZ BAND’ OF TORONTO. JAMIE HAS PUT TOGETHER A GROUP FROM BOTH CANADA AND OHIO TO GENERATE A FLAT OUT DIXIELAND BAND THAT LEFT OUR FANS ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED AND ASKING FOR MORE. JUST WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD HAPPEN AND WHEN. THEY’LL BE BACK AGAIN FOR SURE! ALONG WITH ‘DINNY & THE ALL STARS’, ANOTHER GREAT CANADIAN BAND.

THIS REFRESHING MIX OF U.S. AND CANADIAN TALENT SUGGESTED BY WAYNE PAULI AND BOOKED BY DAN McCUE PROVED THAT CANADIAN BANDS ARE A SURE FIRE SUCCESS WHEN ADDED TO OUR MUSICAL ROSTER. OUR CURRENT BOARD CERTAINLY DEMANDS APPRECIATION FOR THIS SEARCH AND BOOKING. THEY ARE DEFINITELY NOT AFRAID TO MOVE THINGS AROUND. KEEP YOUR EARS TUNED FOR UPCOMING SURPRISES.

FON BURNS – President

THANK YOU DON

WE ARE BLESSED TO HAVE THIS KIND OF TALENT PERFORM FOR US EVERY SATURDAY AT OUR JAZZ CLUB. WE’RE SO PLEASED THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO SHARE THEIR TALENTS WITH YOUR SOCIETY.

AND A BIG “THANK YOU” TO JAMIE AND DINNY FOR GIVING OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS SOME MEMORABLE MOMENTS. KEEP ON JAZZIN’

SEE YOU SATURDAY
